A Mobile Schoolhouse for Children on the Move
The Schoolbox Project: Border Program is a special collaboration with Border Angels, a non-profit organization that has been providing humanitarian support to migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border for over 30 years. Volunteers, largely from the local community, utilize a Schoolbox “Skoolie” to deliver education, art, and play activities to children in migrant shelters throughout Tijuana.
Most of the children being served are refugees and asylees seeking safety from political and gang violence in Central America, but many are also children who have been deported from the United States.
Program sessions also provide an opportunity to identify vulnerable children and to make critical resource referrals for children who may otherwise fall through the cracks.
